Traditional sports are the cornerstone of Special Olympics, comprising a large majority of the training and competition experiences for our athletes. Designed for individuals with low to high sports skills, a traditional sports setting is where our athletes train and compete with other individuals who have intellectual disabilities. This aspect of the program emphasizes the training and competition components as being equally important, and each component benefits from the other.
Traditional sports represent the middle of our sports continuum, as a progression up from Motor Activities Training and a transition toward Unified Sports® for those athletes who choose to participate at another level.
